How to Master Integrals in Class 12 NCERT Mathematics
Mastering integrals is essential for your success in Class 12 Mathematics. Integration and differentiation are inverse operations. The integral of a function is also known as the antiderivative. You will begin with the study of indefinite integrals.
Basic Formulas for Integration
To start, familiarize yourself with a few basic formulas of integration. For indefinite integrals, remember to add the constant \( c \), which is the integration constant. The most fundamental method of integration is the substitution method. Once you master this technique, you will be able to tackle almost any integration problem.
Integrating Quotient Functions
Next, you will learn how to integrate quotient functions. There are two scenarios to consider:
When the degree of the numerator is greater than or equal to the degree of the denominator: In this case, divide the numerator by the denominator. Write down the quotient and remainder, and then proceed to integrate using the appropriate formula.
When the degree of the numerator is less than the degree of the denominator: Here, you will use the method of partial fractions. Keep in mind that there are at least four cases to understand: distinct roots, repeated roots, and complex roots.
Standard Integrals
You will then move on to learn four standard integrals: tan, cot, cosec, and sec. You will solve problems based on these integrals. Additionally, you will encounter special cases involving linear/quadratic or linear/sqrt(quadratic) forms. These two types are quite similar in terms of solving methods.
Integrating Functions of Sin and Cos
Next, you'll learn how to integrate rational functions of \( \sin x \) and \( \cos x \). A special type you will study is the integral of the form \( \frac{a \sin x + b \cos x}{c \sin x + d \cos x} \). Another important integral involves even powers of \( x \) occurring in both the numerator and denominator, specifically when the numerator has degree two and the denominator has degree four.
Integration by Parts
An essential topic is integration by parts. Remember the order of the functions while using this method. You can use the acronym ILATE or LIATE to help you remember. There is also a special form of integration by parts that involves the exponential function, which is equally important.

Definite Integrals
Moving on, you will learn about definite integrals. This topic teaches you how to evaluate definite integrals as the limit of a sum. Note that this topic has been excluded from the latest syllabus for ISC and NCERT.
You will explore the Fundamental Theorem of Integral Calculus, which allows you to evaluate definite integrals effectively. You will also see how the substitution method is applied in definite integrals.
Keep in mind that when you use the substitution method for definite integrals, the limits also change. Lastly, you will learn about the properties of definite integrals. These properties are crucial for problem-solving.
