How to Learn AP Calculus Applications of Definite Integrals?

This is Applications of Integrals, Unit 9 of AP Calculus. A parent once told me that units 8, 9 and 10 are the most difficult chapters of AP Calculus..

I am Suman Mathews ,math educator and content creator and I hope to help you understand this chapter. You will need a graphing calculator for this chapter.

Firstly, you will need to learn how to calculate the average value of a function. Basically, what you will need is to calculate the area enclosed by each bounded region. Keep in mind that when the area is below the x axis, you will need to subtract the area. When the area is above the x axis, you will need to add the area. The same formula applies when you have to calculate the average velocity between two points.

Given a velocity curve, you'll learn how to plot it and determine when the velocity is equal to zero. Velocity is obtained by integrating the acceleration function. Note that speed is the absolute value of velocity.. Total distance travelled by a particle can be obtained by integrating the velocity function while total displacement is calculated by taking the values where velocity is negative . If asked to find the total distance travelled when the particle is moving to the right, we look at only positive values of the velocity function.

In this context, keep in mind that profit is evaluated by integrating the marginal profit and cost is obtained by integrating the marginal cost. You can also use this concept to assess the temperature of an object given the derivative of the temperature function. Given a case when water is leaking from a can at a rate of f '(t). Integrate

f '(t) to find the total amount of water leaked. Given the rate of growth of a population, you can also compute the population at any time t.

Also learn about the logistic formula in population related problems. You'll also need to learn the Euler's formula for approximating y at a certain point. Sketching slope fields for a curve is yet another important topic.. There are a few case study based questions at the end.
